Rutherford is a bustling community with a population of approximately 18,000 residents, Rutherford is located just eight miles west of New York City, and centrally located to many major roadways, transporation systems. The borough offers excellent schools, dining and shopping options and recreational activities year-round.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy the entertainment and shopping options in Rutherford. Rutherford's downtown district offers a variety of activities, including fine and casual dining, two three-star restaurants, shops, stores and numerous nightlife activities. Also located downtown is the Williams Center for the Arts, which contains three movie theaters and a 700-seat concert hall that features both children's theater and other performing arts.
Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the Nereid Boat Club, which is located on the Passaic River, and is one of the New York City area's only calm water rowing sites. The Boat Club is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the healthy sport of rowing on all levels. Many residents enjoy the club for competition, recreation, or just physical fitness during summer months. Rutherford offers numerous other recreational activities, including organized sports and activities for both children and adults, which are offered year-round.
Just twelve miles from Newark International Airport, two miles from the NJ Turnpike and four miles from the Garden State Parkway, Rutherford is conveniently located for easy access to all of Bergen County. Its location on the NJ Transit Bergen Line allows short commute times to New York City and beyond.
Rutherford boasts a strong school public system. Students in grades one through five attend Lincoln, Sylvan or Washington Schools; students in grades one through eight attend either Pierrepont or Union Schools; and high school students attend Rutherford High School. The Rutherford school district has traditionally been recognized as a leader in academic excellence. Felician College also occupies a 10-acre campus site within the borough of Rutherford.
